The Five-Factor Model — openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism, often abbreviated OCEAN — is a well-established framework from personality psychology for describing human personality along five measurable dimensions. It's used in real psychological research precisely because it captures a wide range of individual variation with a small, stable set of traits.

Why this translates well to AI characters

Representing a character as a set of scored traits, rather than a paragraph of adjectives, gives a system something concrete to reference when generating a response — a character high in openness and low in conscientiousness should consistently behave differently from one with the inverse profile, across completely different conversation topics and situations, not just in scenes explicitly about personality.

The harder problem: consistency over time

A trait score is only useful if it's actually referenced every time a response is generated, and if it interacts sensibly with a character's emotional state and relationship history rather than existing in isolation. A character can be high in agreeableness in general while still being capable of real frustration in a specific moment — the trait sets a baseline tendency, not a rigid script.
