What Is a "Digital Twin" in an AI Companion App?

"Digital twin" originally described a virtual model of a physical system — a factory, an engine, a building — kept in sync with real-world sensor data so engineers could simulate changes before making them in reality. AI companion apps have borrowed the term for something related in spirit but different in practice: a private, persistent AI model of a person, built from what they choose to share.

A digital twin in this context isn't a public-facing character, isn't shared with other users, and isn't the same thing as a companion character you chat with. It's a private space where a deeper, more detailed model of your own preferences, history, and patterns can be built up over time, scoped entirely to your own account.

Because a digital twin is built from more personal and detailed input than an ordinary companion conversation, the ability to wipe it — fully and specifically, without needing to delete your entire account — is a meaningfully more important control than it is for a regular chat history.
